Map D:The Route of the first Pre-Madang Parade
The 1993 prior-evening parade assembled at Matsunokimachi Danchi (public housing block), and moved north and east to the Avanti Building, where the drummers and dancers occupied the only public plaza that Higashi-kujo shares with the general Kyoto population (because of its adjacency to the Shinkansen [bullet train] terminus of Kyoto Station.
The 100 plus women, men and children occupied this area for about a half an hour, playing their drums and dancing.
Their appropriation of this space was done without prior consent from the city or the owners of the Avanti Building. It was the boldest counter-public statement made in the first year of this event.
