Kyoto in 1873.

This is a composite map created from two maps published in 1873 for foreign visitors to Kyoto’s first Exposition. Note the many small water courses in the city (in blue). The remains of the old city wall (odoi) still separates the new Kyoto Station—from which a single track (in red) heads for Osaka (this is before the tunnels through the Higashiyama hills allowed trains to the north)—from the Higashi-kujo area (in red). Higashi-kujo here is not only outside of Kyoto, but also contains no buildings on this map. At this time it may have been subject to flooding. 1873 was only the sixth year of Meiji, and already the city was preparing for tourism.
